A Life Changing Repair

For most of us, going back and forth from inside our home to the front yard is something we do without much thought.  For families who have children with medical, physical and/or mental health/behavioral challenges, having a home that is accessible and safe is something that requires thought, intentional planning and resources. Families often are faced with either updating their current home or moving into a home that can accommodate their child’s needs long term. This is one of the unexpected life changes in the world of disabilities - one that can be costly and require additional physical and emotional capital to caregivers already spending 30-80 extra hours a week in care alone for their children.

The Anderson* family found themselves needing to navigate this change. They were fortunate enough to find a home with a wheelchair ramp already installed, but quickly realized it had loose boards, nails and was difficult to navigate. The Andersons feared their kiddo with a medical disability would get hurt while using the ramp and knew they must make repairs -  not only for their child’s safety, but also for their community of extended family and friends who were wheelchair bound and visited their home often.

The Andersons were willing to financially support the project, but needed assistance with the project plan, the tools and manpower. The CAN DO Directory connected this sweet Pause family with The Caring Craftsman, a local non-profit who helps families who have disabilities complete home projects they otherwise couldn’t on their own.  The Caring Craftsman showed up to the Anderson family home with not only a plan, but all the supplies needed to repair the wheelchair ramp.  As a surprise, the repair of the ramp was completed in six weeks free of charge - made possible with an additional partnership with the Haunnah Meyer Memorial Fund.

Three organizations working together - because together we are stronger.  The repaired wheelchair ramp gives our Pause kiddo more accessibility and independence while giving the family peace of mind that their child is safe - something we all want for our kids. The Anderson family is proud their home is accessible to all - no matter age or ability. Community and families partnering together to make this world feel more connected, resilient and loved...

This is CAN DO.  This is COMMUNITY.  This is YOUR SUPPORT.  (*Names have been changed for privacy.)
